Pandora Lent V

Days without ice cream - 6

I dream of the Underground
Of rope ladders twisting downwards
Into steep, helix-round tunnels
The only exits from these vast worms.
Of sunsets in red, of vast flowing rivers
And of London.
Grey, sunny, enclosed, enlivened.
And I know what I have left behind
And what I seek as I travel these tunnels
Or stand by the Thames
Or stay barefoot and naked on Hampstead Heath.

I had to leave you behind
Not because I didn't love you.
But I couldn't have you trapped
Bound in these unending, dark
Subterranean passageways.
