The Scottish Meme

This was pinched from the king of the memes, Sunday Stealing after I realised that I was halfway through a meme that I'd already done that was possibly stolen off me or the Plastic Mancunian at some stage. Sunday Stealing's meme questions are sometimes great. Sometimes they're just plain naff - an as I'm in the middle of planning and structuring a novel, memes are about all I have time or inclination for.

Anyways. Here goes nothing.

1. Where are you from and where do you live now?

I'm originally from Adelaide, South Australia. I'm not from Myponga, South Australia as people think - only moved there when I was eight.

Now, I live in inner city Melbourne.


2. Favorite childhood story/book/film?

Favorite childhood story - Cinderella. Gotta love a happy ending. Favorite book - I don't think I had one - I've been an avid reader from a young age and loved Golden Books - especially anything with Disney characters. Favorite film as a kid - The Sound of Music. I can still sing most of the songs by rote.


3. If you could change gender for a day what would you do?

That is a bit of a loaded question. Honestly. If I had a penis for the day? You mean other than play with myself all day (that's what men sometimes do, don't they?)  Pee standing up without getting my feet wet. I think I'd love to see what it's like to have sex as a bloke. That would be cool. And wear trousers - I just what to see where everything goes - that's always been a mystery to me how everything fits in there...

You can tell I don't have brothers.


4. Do you feel you family is complete or would you like more/some children?

Terribly loaded question. I don't have kids. I've never had a partner. Would I like a child/children? Yes. But not without being in a loving, committed relationship? Do I feel the loss of not having children. Not really. I see what my friends go through a lot of the time and I count my blessings that it's never happened to me - then again. I'm grateful for the opportunities being childless has given me? Will I miss it on the future? I don't know. I do know that though I'm good with kids I don't know I'd be a good mother. I'm far too messed up to do a good job.


5. What do you do/Where do you work and do you enjoy it?

My day job for the next two weeks is at Bastard Bank - I'm on a project working as an instructional designer/tech writer. Starting the joyous job hunt tomorrow. Joy. I'm getting used to this onwards and upwards to the next adventure lark. As long as the people are nice and the work interesting, I'm fine.

By night/weekend, I write, massage, do reflexology, read tarot and look after other people's cats.

6. Which three words do you think sum you up?

Hard one. Three years ago those words would have been fat, ugly and stupid.

Now, I prefer to sum myself up as kind, loyal and tenacious. I don't like being labelled, but they're good words.


7. If you were a fairy what magical powers would you possess?

My magical fairy ability would be to turn back time. Not that I have any regrets, but it could come in handy to repeat tests and get another chance at things.


8. If you were invisible, where would you go and what would you do? Why?

If I was invisible I'd be using that ability regularly to sneak into the theatre and cinema all over the place. Theatre tickets over here are extortionate and I reckon I could get to see everything I'd love to see - including opera, but sneaking in unseen. Well, that sounds like a good plan to me...


9. What song can’t you listen to without crying?

There are quite a few songs that make me tear up, but this one gets me every time - time and time again.

10. Which book changed your life – or at least made you think a lot?

There have been many books that I have influenced my life, but only one that changed the course of it.

"Captain Corelli's Mandolin" was the book that took me to Greece. Robertson Davies "Cornish Trilogy" got me back into literature. Jane Green's "Straight Talking" was my life 15 years ago - I even had the "Adam" character in my life (pity that's the best thing she's ever written.)

But the book that changed my life is Dr Spencer Johnson's "Who Moved My Cheese." I read this in Fitzroy Gardens on the day I found out about a colleague taking his own life. The book spurned me on to leave my job, move to Greece, change my career and stop being so scared. It's had a huge impact and I can never be more grateful for reading a book. I'd hate to think where I would be if I didn't stumble across it.


11. Why do you blog?

Many reasons. I'm mainly a frustrated writer. It's at times a great emotional release, especially when I feel like there's nobody there - which I do feel regularly. I get to flex my satirical pen occasionally. It's a good training ground. And I love the friendships I'm starting to develop in the blogosphere.

But mainly I'm a frustrated writer and this give me a place to write - in a safe, solid environment.


12. What is your top ‘me-time’ tip?

Book the time in and make sure you take it. I don't get enough me-time at times - especially during the week I appear to be over-committed. Also, get your chores out the way before embarking on me-time - or all your time will be spent scrubbing floors and ironing - sod that - says she who's ironing a shirt and doing a question of this meme.


13. What can’t you live without?

In no order of importance: friends, books, ice cream, my health and fitness, running, the gym, cat time, animals, sunshine, the promise of travel, at least five hours sleep a night, my independence, my iPhone.


14. Which of all your blog posts are you most proud of and why?

I have a few that I'm rather fond of. I like some of my funny ones - like the one about "Would you do Shane Warne?" and the one about my dodgy taste in men, which is pretty legendary. Some of my travel posts and running posts are good.

But there are two blog posts that stick out. A letter written to my eighteen-year-old self and the post written after running a full 21.1 kilometre half marathon for the first time.

15. Have you ever met a famous person? Who and where?

I've run into many famous people in my life, but met? Hmmm. Does standing behind Emma Thompson and Geoffrey Rush in a supermarket queue count? Or nearly tripping over Bill Hunter outside work one day (God bless him)? Or passing Andrew Bolt in the street (not fast enough to trip him?)

Ah - that's it. I bummed a cigarette off Jeremy Clarkson in a restaurant many years ago - it was that long ago when you could smoke in restaurants. And he was still a pillock. And I emptied Sir Cliff Richard's bin on a work hazing day about twenty years ago (worked in an employment agency that ran industrial temps - we had to work as a bin man (dustman) for a day to get a grip on what people did for a living... But that doesn't count because I didn't meet him - I just emptied his wheelie bin.

16. When did you last have a full nights sleep?

Last night. I normally sleep pretty well.


17. What would you think is harder: Going to work or staying at home with children?

Hands down, staying home with children. I don't have the foggiest what you'd do with them all day. They're exhausting. At least at work, you can get away now and then if required.


18. What are you doing for Easter?

Hiding and getting some me time. I also have two cats to look after. Kitt's Burmese, Kusha, is coming to stay and I have custody of Betty, Glen Waverley and Merijn's cat, Betty. Have also been told that the latter has a smelly, pus-filled bottom and that a trip to the vet might be in order. Joy! That thing will take me arm off getting her in the cat cage!


19. What is your favorite drink?

Fresh brewed, espresso coffee. Very fond of beer in most of its forms too. And for any time imbibing - nothing goes past cool, filtered water.


20. Do you play any sports?

Nope, but I run, cycle, swim and go to the gym regularly. Does that count?


21. What is your most embarrassing moment?

I make a tit of myself regularly, but my standout moment was many years ago when I was filing at work and had to kneel down and my dress split at the seams. It was horrifying. Will never forget how awful that felt. What made it worse was the guys that I worked with didn't tell me for a few hours. Shite really.


22. How clever are you?

I'd consider myself fairly clever. I'm no brainiac, but I'm not stupid. And I'm "pretty good with words" smart.


23. Name a new favorite TV show?

I've been enjoying "Homeland" over the last few weeks - very well done - though Damian Lewis - like how can a ginger be sexy? He seems to pull it off - though I'll never get him out of my head as being Soames the Bastard from the Foryste Saga.


24. Any guilty pleasures?

Yes. Other than ice cream? I watch the Biggest Loser religiously - don't hold it against me - I love crap telly - I like good telly too and I miss England mostly because the television is so much better than here - but I'm fond of shows like RPA, Embarrassing Bodies etc. I love Pixar films. Nothing makes me happier than playing fetch with a dog or giving the Maow Maow a cuddle.

25. If you could have chosen your own name, what would it be?

I have a real name - and I write under Pandora Behr (come on, you didn't think my real name was Pandora T. Behr? Really?!)

I've got another pen name lined up - Kabbalistically charged and ready to go, though I told a few friends and they couldn't see the point. Thing is, I don't like my real name that much - more my surname than my Christian name - too many bad association.

So if you see a book by Trelawny Tom in the future, it's me.

In real life, I reckon I'd made a good Samantha or Alexandra - they're the names I would have liked to be called as a kid. - But I'm find with Pandora and my 'real' Christian name too.

26. Who do you most admire in life, and why?

I have a lot of people I admire for many reasons. Big people. Little people.

But my hat goes off to my cousin who runs a hospice in Canberra. Selfless work, caring for the dying day in and out. She's utterly remarkable and she does a job I could never do. She's very much an unsung hero.  
 27. What is your most treasured possession?

I'm not really into things, but I'm very fond of my car and the Pandora bracelet that received for my 40th birthday, which is filled with charms given to me by my friends.

My bed and my dog-earred copy of "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" is up there in close second.


28. Tell your favorite funny joke…

How do you titillate an ocelot?

You oscillate its tit alot.

Not funny? Never to mind. I only know bad jokes.


29. What is your biggest fear in life?

I have lots of minor fears, but the one that stands out is the thought of dying a slow, painful death. I really hope when it happens it's all over quickly.


30. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? What does it remind you of?

I have many favorite ice creams - ice cream being the sixth food group and all, why single it out to one.

Of my favorite, the one I wish I could get my hands on is Sorbayz White Chocolate ice cream - which was just too divine for words. Big chunks of white chocolate - my favourite.

If I'm at an Indian restaurant I'll try and have a scoop of coconut ice cream for dessert. Love the stuff. If in an Asian restaurant, then I'll go the Green Tea or Black Sesame ice cream - cos they're decadent and interesting.

My favorite new flavour - found a few weeks ago - White chocolate and wasabi ice cream. Found this flavour in an ice creamery on Bourke Street - bloody marvellous stuff - and the wasabi isn't overpowering.

My supermarket standbys are as follows:

Ben and Jerry's Choc Chip Cookie Dough. This reminds me of when I used to go and sleep on a friend's floor in London to escape my share house in the last few months I was there. Snuggled up under his Snap, Crackle and Pop duvet cover, we'd share a tub of this and watch whatever was on the said Friday night. It was a nice respite from the chaos of having a bed in a basement hallway.

Here, my go to ice cream - Maggie Beer's Burnt Fig, Honey Comb and Caramel ice cream. This stuff is pure ambrosia - great for when you need to sook with a tub of the stuff.

The back up, if this isn't available - the Connoisseur range, Cookies and Cream.

But this is all moot, because I let myself have a scoop or two a week - it's just no good for my figure - and too much sugar gives me the sads.

Well there you go, another dull Saturday night at home alone, another meme done - along with the ironing, hoovering, more of my Greek travel article job...

The Blue Day Meme

It's Sunday and I'm editing. As I've got much to write about at the moment that I wish to share but finding it hard to articulate anything - there is some big stuff going in the background, but it's not really my stuff to talk about.

I'm a bit over writing about cats. I've been doing well in the gym -  I leg pressed 120 kg in the gym yesterday (and did squats with 45 kgs on my back and generally kicked some butt). And contrary to popular belief, hoiking weights around is lady-like - and it doesn't mess with your manicure - see.

But as I'm dithering with all sorts of other subjects, and I don't feel like writing about job hunting, illness, boredom or editing, I though a quick meme might help break the monotony.  So I'm parsing two pages and answering a question. I need to get this editing job out of the way - and I feel the need to write.

1) If the whole world were listening to you right now, what would you say?

Oh my, what would I say to the world - hell! That's a huge question. Probably something along the lines of stuff capitalism, stuff everything, find a way of fixing the environmental problems in the world and fix them now. We're running out of time - stop bickering and get on with it. Oh, and while you're at it - be nice to one another.

The joys of being a mix of INFJ  and INFP - stupidly idealistic.

2) If you could meet anyone on this earth, who would it be?

There's plenty of people I'd love to meet - Kenneth Branagh, Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, all the normal people who make these sorts of lists.

But the one person I'd love to meet is my grandfather's brother, Roy. He died a year before I was born, but I think he'd be fascinating.

You see, Uncle Roy was a soldier and a postmaster. In WW1 he was responsible for keeping the lines of communication open at Villers Bretonneux and Bellicourt. He received the Military Medal twice for repairing lines under heavy enemy shell fire with a total disregard for danger. He was the postmaster in Darwin when the Japanese attacked during WWII. My aunt remembers him as one of the funniest and loveliest blokes she's ever met - and if you asked him what he did in the war, he responded., "Ah, I just milked a cow in no-man's land."

I've always wanted to meet a real hero. Uncle Roy fits the bill.

Saying this, of my maternal grandparent's siblings two ended up in Gallipoli, another two on the Western Front and one lies in a graveyard in Egypt.

3) You just got a free plane ticket to anywhere. You have to depart right now. Where are you gonna go?

If I had the chance, I'd go back to Spain in a heartbeat. LOVE the place - in particular, Toledo. But on my last trip, I didn't get to go to a heap of places - I'd love to go back to Barcelona, go see Zaragoza, Bilbao, San Sebastian, Cordoba, Salamanca, Segovia... - and of course, I want to spend more time in Toledo, Seville and Granada. There's also a dream I have of returning to Spain for a few months and maybe do the Camino do Santiago de Compostella - a pilgrimage along the north coast of Spain.

Yeah, I'd go to Spain. Though I'd love to go visit Reindert in Boston too. Or go back to London for a pint with friends. Or pop over to New Zealand to see some old mates. Or head back to Thailand and go Buddha watching in between getting the bejeezus pummelled out of me by some Thai masseuse (love Thai massage).

So many places, so little time and money... and must renew my passport.

4) What do you think about most?

Sex. Next.

5) You have the opportunity to spend a romantic night with the music celebrity of your choice. Who would it be?

Bryn Terfel.

Who you ask? Bryn Terfel is a Welsh Baritone/Bass. His voice sends shivers down my spine. The fact that he's the spitting image of an ex-boyfriend of mine has nothing to do with it. I'm a sucker for an accent, he's a funny bloke and his voice is to die for.

If he's not available, I reckon hanging out with the Pixies might be fun too. Might not be romantic but it would be fun.


6) You can erase any horrible experience from your past. What will it be?

There are a couple of things I don't discuss in this blog - and the few things I'd like to erase come under this gag order. Then again, these crappy experiences make who you are. They aren't regrets, their just things I could do without happening to me.

Of the plentiful things I'm willing to talk about:

The last three months of my working life would be great to get rid of, though I've learned a lot so I can't moan too much.

Glandular fever when I was in my early twenties - could have done without that.

And the dry socket I got after having an impacted wisdom tooth removed - wouldn't want to go through that again.

7) What's your strangest talent?

I have lots of strange talents and abilities - ask my friends. I can diminish pain with a phone call. I know where people are hurting. I'm a dab hand with a pack of tarot cards.

But my strangest talent is my party trick. I can recite the whole of "Jabberwocky", normally using a bedspread for a cloak and a breadknife for the vorpal blade.

Yes, I'm a geek!

8) What would be a question you'd be afraid to tell the truth on?

I think this question might be under the gag order too.

The one that springs to mind would be somebody asking me if I love/loved them. Scares me witless.

9) Ever had a poem or song written about you?

Don't be daft. No. Not that I'm aware of.

10) When is the last time you played the air guitar?

I don't play air guitar, but I do play air drums a lot. And the last time I did that was in the car a few days ago, doing my best Phil Collins impression at a set of traffic lights drumming along to Vamos by The Pixies.

11) Do you have any strange phobias?

Other that being scared of success and intimacy, and I'm working on those - I'm not fond of huntsman spiders, but as I've slain a couple now I'm less scared of them. I get a bit of claustrophobia, but it's not debilitating and I can manage that. I think all of my minor phobias and foibles are pretty normal - and I'm thankful they don't stop me from doing anything.

On second thought, anybody who's been with me when I've been walking down stairs will know that I have to take a breath before going down stairs or escalators. It's not that I'm scared of them, I just had a seriously bad fall going down a set of stairs as a kid when I was in callipers. Strangely, my Mum and Grandma do/did exactly the same thing.

12) What's your religion?

Gawd, another loaded question. I'm best described as an agnostic wiccan. I believe there's something out there that's bigger than us. I believe in the power of nature. I love the structure that the Kabbalah gives me. I respect the teachings of Christ and the Buddha, but I don't believe in either of them being my personal saviour or prophet. I'm certainly not affiliated with any organised religion - and I'm not an athiest.

Happy to let anybody believe in what they want as long as they don't try to throw it down my throat.

13) What is your current desktop picture?

The top one was taken at Castle Urquart on Loch Ness a few years ago, the bottom one is of the front door of the Toledo Cathedral from the lane leading to it. This was taken on my travels last year. I love both photos.

14) When you are outside, what are you most likely doing?

Walking or running. I love doing both.

15) What's the last song you listened to?

This was posted on a friend's facebook page today - and I have to repost this clip. I think I prefer this to the original - great song anyway, but this just rocks. And  it's really worth watching the clip. It's cool.

Sure beats the Cat Stevens song I was going to have to mention which is playing in the car at the moment.

16) Simple but extremely complex. Favorite band?

Easy. The Pixies. Utterly, utterly brilliant.

Favorite Australian Band - toss up between The Hoodoo Gurus and Hunters and Collectors.

17) What was the last lie you told?

My naturopath asked me how my blood pressure was yesterday. I said fine when in reality I wasn't too sure. I took it a minute ago and it was 130/78 - which is fine - but when she asked me I felt a little guilty about no knowing. A lie by apathy really.

18) Do you believe in karma?

Yes, but not big picture, do something bad and come back as a poor person in Africa type karma. I do believe what goes around comes around.

19) What is a saying you say a lot?

"At the end of the day..." Terrible turn of phrase, at the end of the day.

I like to use Blarney's standard "And thank your mother for the rabbits." It floors people.

"I am the suppository of all useless knowledge" gets a regular bashing too, at the end of the day.

20) What is your greatest weakness; your greatest strength?

My greatest weakness is ice cream. Followed by getting destructive when bored.

My greatest strength is my ability to persevere and stick with things.

21) Who is your celebrity crush?

Clive Owen. Phwoar! He's been on my Christmas list for years.


22) Give me the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word: heart.

Mitral valve. My father was one of the first people in Australia to have his surgically replaced back in the seventies. He used to tick like a clock.

23) How do you vent your anger?

Ranting and stomping.

Not many people have witnessed me in full flight anger - it's freaking scary when I do get like this, really truly awful murderous rages can happen - but I've only been in that state a few times in the last couple of decades. When I get like this I could seriously murder.

Normally, when I'm in a strop I go into a rant, shout at things and stomp about - if it's really bad, I'll hit a pillow or throw an inanimate object against a wall.

Thankfully, I normally just get mildly stroppy every now and then.

24) Do you have a collection of anything?

Other than the 30 or so packs of tarot cards I have in my cupboard, I have a small collection of carved elephants that people have brought back for me. When people go to Africa, India or Asia I always ask for a little elephant. I have four in my collection and hope to have a few more by the end of the year.

25) What is your favorite word?

Serendipity.

If I ever had/have a daughter I'd love to give her Serendipity as a middle name (or hidden second middle name after more sensible Christian names). It rolls of the tongue well. It means happy accident - which if I had a child, other than being a miracle, it would be a  happy accident.

Right, I've done 50 pages of editing - better get back to it.

Hopefully I get some inspiration to write a real blog post soon.

Goodbye 2011

I did this meme at the end of last year at the urging of one of my favorite bloggers, The Plastic Mancunian - and I am doing it again - just to see how things have changed - and to see just what 2011 has brought. It's a good thing to sum up the year.

Like last year, I have things I should be doing, such as doing more editing, cleaning my flat, organising the kitchen cupboards, looking for work - but I think I'll do this instead.

It's been a funny year. It's been a hard year for many, many people - and I'm interested to see what comes up in these questions again.

1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?

There's been a few things that stand out about this year. I've never had nearly four months off work in my adult life. That was cool and scary in order. I also climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge in August, ran in the City to Surf in Sydney and the City to Bay in Adelaide - both races in which I'd never participated. I also started to wear size 14 jeans - which has been unheard of for nearly three decades. The 1000 Steps were scaled on numerous occasions - the first time in January this year.

Oh, and I have gone a full year without fast food from any of the major chains this year I'll put my hand up to the occasional visit to my local Chinese, but other than a coffee at McDonalds at Easter, I haven't had any KFC, McDonalds or Hungry Jacks this calendar year - and long may it continue. (That coffee went down as the worst I had this year as well - but any port in a storm on Good Friday when you're stuck out in the burbs.)

2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

This year I did quite well. I lost around 16 kilograms this year and managed to get myself very fit. Unfortunately, I've put five kilograms back on, but they will go. The fitness thing is great too. I've got running again - with great success. The promised Mazda 2 is sitting in the carport.

Okay, I didn't get two articles into newspapers and my house deposit is nowhere near where I want it to be, but I've kept  my resolutions for the most part.

And my resolutions for next year. I have a few. It was pointed out to me that you can make resolutions at any stage. But here goes:

1) To finish the job I started last year in losing weight and get fitter - I'm over half way there now. It's going to happen. The base is good.
2) To wear sunscreen any times I'm venturing out for more than 20 minutes.
3) To keep on with the savings
4) To go overseas somehwere (Bali or Thailand will be fine - just need to replace my passport first)
5) To run a full marathon
6) To participate in the following runs - injury permitting - The Great Ocean Road Half Marathon, The Puffing Billy Run, The Melbourne Run for the Kids, The Sydney City to Surf. I would love to do the New York Marathon. Again, just shoving it out there.

That will do for the moment.

3. How will you be spending New Year's Eve?

With a couple of new friends in Hawthorn. It will be a quiet night. The only similarity with last year's New Year's Eve is that Maow Maow is arround for cuddles.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Unfortunately, yes. My mother's best friend died in tragic circumstances in May. She was a huge part in my childhood and teenage years and was somebody who taught me the value of unconditional love. A complicated woman with the world on her shoulders - I know she's up there in heaven doing decoupage, drinking cappucino with a string of beads round her neck and a slash of fuschia pink lipstick adorning her mouth. She's sadly missed.

5. What countries did you visit?

Bad news on this front - I didn't leave Australia this year. Will have to fix that in 2012 as soon as my passport is renewed - it only has 30 days to run on it.

I did make two trips to Adelaide and seemingly countless trips to Sydney last year - that was the extent of my travels in 2011.

6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?

Sex. Intimacy. Dinner parties. International Travel. A day job that I love. A focus on my novel that I want to write.

7. What date from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

August 13 was a near to perfect day. I spent the day in Sydney, had a wander around with some great friends, climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the went out to one of the best meals I've had in a long time at a fantastic Japanese Restaurant in the Rocks. Great day.

October 1 was pretty good too.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Looking a lot of weight and keeping the bulk of it off. Still to finish the job completely, but I'm well on the way now. I like my body. I love being very fit. I enjoy what my body can do. Never had this before.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Other than saving more money, probably taking second best in my career. Not that I have a 'proper' career - I just made a few too many compromises on the work front - and though I love the consultancy I work for, I hate being back in banking. These compromises had to be made, but it's something that needs to be fixed.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Other than the odd muscle strain, one bad cold and a small, but annoying burst cyst, it's been a good year for health. Much better than last year.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Neville, my 2009, silver grey Mazda 2. Very, very glad I bought him. The old car was going to start costing me lots of money.

12. Where did most of your money go?

Rent and car payments. No change there.

13. What song will always remind you of 2011?

Unfortunately it's LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It". It always seems to play when I'm in the gym in the grunty boy section and it is just WRONG!

"The Show" sung by the daughter character in "Moneyball" has haunted me too.

14. What do you wish you'd done more of?

In no order:

• Kiss
• Exercise
• Reading

• Worked at things I loved
• Worked on my book

15. What do you wish you'd done less of?

16. What was your favourite TV program?

A few standouts - The Hour that recently showed on the ABC was brilliant. The Slap was very, very good too.

True Blood is my go to for a quick buzz - it's really just soft core pornography, but it's fun.

And I'm still a sucker for RPA, Embarrasing Bodies and anything on geneology and good documentaries. I'm a nerd. It's okay.

17. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

No. I don't hate people other than Tony Abbott. Wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire.

The blow up I'd had with a friend this time last year has resolved itself and we're mates again.
18. What was the best book you read?


Fiction - Emma Donaghue's "Room" - superb book.

Re-reading De Berniere's "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" reinstated my faith in humanity and reminded me why it's my favorite book.

Non-Fiction - Christopher McDougall's "Born to Run". Who'd a thunk a book about a tribe of ultramarathon running Mexicans would be so uplifting.

19. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Florence and the Machine. Angus and Julia Stone. Josh Pike. All good - and yes, I know I'm years behind in musical taste.

20. What was your favourite film of this year?

Ah, this is always hard. Of the runner's up, Moneyball, The Help, The Eye of the Storm, Midnight in Paris and Oranges and Sunshine are all up there.

The two films I'm calling out - Bridesmaids - PISS FUNNY - just my sense of humour, as base as it can be, with a touch of honesty and humility for good measure.

But my favorite film of this year would have to be Barney's Version. Just sublime. Love Paul Giamatti. Not many people saw it. A great, great, great film.

21. What did you do on your birthday?

I have birthday week rather than birthday day. So rather than go to Jacques Reymond, like I did earlier in the week, or got Yarra Valley, which I did in the days after, I went to my favorite cheap and cheerful Malaysian restaurant  with my parents. Long live Sambal Kampung. I also went to work. Fun.

22. What kept you sane?

Writing. Friends. Maow Maow. True Blood. Ice Cream.

23. Who did you miss?

Reindert. I miss having Reindert in Australia still - but I talk to him on skype regularly. I don't see Kitt as often as I used to either, and I miss her as a running buddy.

24. Who was the most interesting new person you met?

I met lots of interesting new people this year - Traralgon, Kez, Kitt, for starters.

I've formed a lovely friendship with Jonella too - and I've very glad I have a like minded soul and reflexologist in my life. Some friendships are hard. This one is easy and I love her for that.

25. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011

I learned a few things this year.

Pereseverence is everything.

And never say never, as sometimes, never, ever, ever comes back into your life and makes you look at things in a different way.

The Hard Questions Meme

As I'm finishing up one role and starting a new one next week, I have a bit of time on my hands.

So these hard questions come from the Sunday Stealing Meme guru - and gave me something more to think about and errant commas and fixing dodgy spelling over the course of the day.

1. What is a quote that you love?

I'm going to give you three - all have very special meanings for me:

"Damaged people are dangerous. They know they can survive." Josephine Hart, Damage. I live my life by this quote. It is unfortunately and terribly true.

"The lunatic, the lover and the poet are of imagination all compact." Midsummer Night's Dream. Act 5 scene 1. This has always eaten away at my imagination.

"I do not find The Hanged Man. Fear death by water." T.S.Eliot. The Wasteland. TS Eliot is indirectly responsible for getting me into tarot. I ponder this poem regularly - it's one of my absolute favorites, and the section with Madame Sosostris in the section "The Burial of the Dead" always says something different to me. Knowing the full meaning of the Hanged Man card some twenty years on I love the playfulness of the whole episode. I also love what Eliot has inadvertently done in making the tarot references.

2. Do you think of pure hate as something humanity created?

No. I think pure hate is the absolute opposite of pure love - and we need diachotomy. They're the flipside of the same thing. Hatred is never pretty. In its most intense form, it is very disturbing - but like everything in the universe it is there as some part of a grand design. I'm just glad that I don't have to witness it first hand very often.

3. When was the last time you wanted to scream?

Yesterday. I was in one of my rare work "zones" trying to get some stuff finished by the end of the day. There is a person around here who I refer to as 'Nails on the Blackboard" for a number of reasons. After four interruptions in ten minutes, this person was the unlucky fifth. I was screaming on the inside. I snapped at this person - something I rarely do I apologised for being such a cow about half an hour later. There was no reason to speak to this person like that - no matter how annoying they can be.

4. Do you ever at times see the world in black and white?

Only sometimes. I'm normally one big shade of grey and see the world in such a way. I see the world in black and white when it comes to injustice - and anything to do with animal cruelty - do what they do to the animal back to them. Simple. Hard line, but simple.

5. Have you ever thought that cell phones are too obtrusive?

Definitely - though I know that I let my mobile get in the way far too often. Leaving my mobile phone at home is akin to losing my right arm. However, I try to be considerate when using it to talk to people in public - especially on public transport. My pet hate is sitting in meetings where people are constantly checking their phones. However, they are great when you want to show photos, they give you games to play when you're waiting for planes and buses and thank goodness for mobile internet. Just turn them off or leave them be when you want REAL people time. End of story.

6. In your life, where do you thank the rainbow will end?

This is a bit of a funny question. See, as somebody who studies the Kabbalah, I think the rainbow ends at Tipharet - when you find your heart and soul. However, if you look at a rainbow, you know that the ends of a rainbow shift . I used to have a window seat on the 41st floor of one of the skyscrapers here in Melbourne. One day we saw a circular rainbow - it was incredible.

Then again, I think the rainbow will end when I win lotto...

7. What is something that you never want to do again?

Yes. I never, ever, ever want to fall in love with somebody who isn't emotionally available, ever, ever, ever again. Hurts far too much.

I'm not sure that I want to fly Tiger Airways again either. They are appalling.

8.When was the first time you realised the world was small?

Walking down Baker Street in London in 1992. I ran into an old university friend. I didn't know she was in London. we were both on the other side of the world. She didn't know I was there either. And we literally bumped into each other. This scene has been repeated in various airports, cities and restaurants across the globe over the years. The introduction of social networking has made the world even smaller. I've made contact with people I never thought I would ever see again over the last few years. The world really isn't that big a place when it all comes down to it.

9. How you spend your time contemplating life’s mysteries?

I do this all the time - though the best way to do this is either sitting in a hot pool of water underneath the stars, or down the pub with a bottle of decent red. If navel gazing was a profession I would be a very rich woman.

10. Ever discuss your political beliefs with people?

Yes, but probably to my detriment. Though normally I will discuss politics at any time of the day or night it's not with fervour and normally with people who I know can cope with my slightly loopy lefty agenda. I love political discussion - but I also like having these types of chats with people who I know will respect my opinion while arguing the point. My friend Kitt and I talk about this stuff when running - we have similar, yet differing opinions - she's just to the right, I'm just to the left - and that is okay. I try to keep my political thoughts to myself until I know somebody - though I'm perceived as a raging lefty by proxy. Thing is, I'm not that extreme.

11. Do you care about the environment?

I do, though probably not enough. I make a point not to litter. I recycle household refuse. I drive a small car. I walk when I can and use public transport often. I try to keep it to three minute showers, I try not to get things with too much packaging and take my own bags to the supermarket. I have a keep cup for my morning work coffee. I turn off the lights and the power outlets when not using electrical items. I use organic hair and skin care. Little things. I know I could do so much more - eat and source local produce, not buy as many books.... and on a grander scale I know there is so much more than I do. Mining grates on me. The fact that our government has the audacity to push the environmentally friendly agenda (Like why don't they have a fleet of Priuses getting the pollies around?) There is so much more we all could do. End of story.

12. What’s your motto for life?

I don't really have one. The closest I have to a motto is " Be positive. Like attracts like."

13. Is progress destroying the beauty of the world?

Another hard and interesting one. In some ways, I think yes - you look at the raping of the planet from all of the "progress" - the deforestation, smog, open cut mines, what is happening in the Pacific with the plastic soup.... the list could be infinite. Then again, there is beauty all around - no matter where you look. I'm looking out my fifth floor window from what is possibly the ugliest building in Melbourne looking over a row of trees, the leaves rustling, I've been watching a small child play with a dog as her parents look on. I know that in a few hours I can watch the sun set - and there is nothing more beautiful than that. I ran around the Botanical Gardens this morning - absolutely glorious. So no matter how much 'progress' appears to destroy the world - beauty is always there - you just have to look for it and open up to its possibilities.

14. Do you believe there is life somewhere else in the universe?

Yes. Definitely. I think it's extremely arrogant and narrow minded to think that we are the only planet in the infinity called space that has life upon it. Even if we haven't found it, it's nice to think that there is 'life' out there somewhere - no matter what that 'life' is. Just because we haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

15. Would you like to rule a country?

Absolutely not. It's the responsibility thing. I couldn't think of anything worse - being responsible for subjects - sounds like too much like hard work. I won't even get a cat because I don't like the thought of being responsible for another life (though I would love a cat, really I would) Ruling a country would be too much like hard work.Being a part of a committee running a country I could do, but to have responsibility for that many people - no way!

16. Do you believe everything has a purpose?

Not really. Somebody might tell me one day what the purpose of zucchinis (courgettes) actually is - cos they aint food. I look at the Melbourne public transport ticketing debacle and I believe that there are some people out there who are exceptionally useless who spent a hell of a lot of money looking for a purpose. And what purposes do rabbits have? None (unless you count calling them vermin or food?) Hmm. Channel 31 - what purpose does that have? So no, not everything has a purpose.

17. Is war ever for the best?

No - but it does have the use of blowing the cobwebs away, destabilising a lot of people often allowing them to rebuild in the long run. See, wars can have a purpose - but they are never, ever for the best. That much heartache should not have to be endured. Or wasting that much money (i.e. Iraq/Afghanistan)

18. Could you kill anyone in defense of self or loved ones?

I think I could. Only in self-defense, but I'm pretty sure that I would have it in me - I think I have access to that sort of strength. I just never want to use it.

19. How do you react to people who don't believe global warming is really our fault?

I roll my eyes, get very, very, very annoyed and try to lead by example - like agreeing with our carbon tax, trying to set my behaviours around a more carbon friendly ways, disagreeing with big coal, writing to MPs about stuff, attending the odd rally - not that it gets you anywhere, but global warming sceptics do get to me. The only person I preach to is my sister - who is a global warming sceptic but chooses to moan. But that can be seen as sport.

20. Does love conquer all?

No - but it does have remarkable restorative powers allegedly.

21. Is euthanasia morally acceptable?

Yes. Quite simply yes - definitely. Not in all situations, of course, but if a person is ill, in pain, there is no chance of a recovery where they have a quality of life acceptable for their standards and they want to go - let them at it. I believe quite strongly in voluntary euthanasia under these circumstances. Saying this, I've also been around the medical profession a bit too long. The term they use is letting somebody go... pumping them full of opiates and not feeding or watering people who are about to die - it happens on a daily basis. This is a form of euthanasia. Wouldn't it be more merciful and compassionate to put these people out of their misery more quickly? After all, we wouldn't treat animals like this, letting them hang around, in pain, suffering for weeks, if not month. Witnessing a few people linger with cancer and old age is not pretty for anybody, least of all the person dying. I think it's time we looked a what is humane for humanity - and I think that is the moral argument.

22. Is world peace impossible?

No. Weren't there three days sometime in the 1920's where there wasn't a war on the planet. World peace may be impossible, but it is a lovely ideal to strive for. 100,000 Miss Universe contestants can't be wrong...

23. Is pride a good or a bad thing?

I think a little bit of pride is a good thing - but only a little bit. I'm a Leo - I have to say this. Pride doesn't have to be arrogance. It can be very self-preserving. Pride in oneself and one's work is also a good thing to have - even if it comes out in good basic personal hygiene. Too much pride is bad - but a little, in moderation, is definitely good. Knowing not to take it too far is the kicker.

24.What do you think is the purpose of your life?

Other than writing bad poetry and answering bizarre questions on blogs - I don't know. I know that one of my ultimate purposes is healing. I'm good at that. I think I'm still trying to find my life's purpose.

25. Do you believe in karma?

Yes. Little picture karma anyway. You're responsible for what you do in this life. If you're a bastard, it will come back to you. If you are good, that will come back to you too. Not sure where I stand on big picture karma - what have the starving of Africa done to the world?

The Eleven Question Mini Meme

To break the monotony and bribe myself into doing some more editing (and not fall victim to watching "The Notebook" on telly for the seventeenth time) I robbed this meme from a friend of the Plastic Mancunian. The deal is, a page of editing, do a question.

This should also break up some of the heavy stuff that's been going on of late. It's a short one too. That's a positive when it comes to memes.

1. If you could live in any other time period, which would you pick?

As much as I love the perceived freedoms and choices we have in these times I reckon living in the sixties could be pretty cool - just for the music, the cars, the clothes and changes that were going on at the time. And Don Draper.

2. What is your favorite topic to write on your blog other than a meme?

I write about all sorts of things. Life, music, friends, food. But most of the time I write about running. If you're not into running, them I'm sorry. I just think that running is a metaphor for life.

3. What are some traits that you admire in a lover?

Oh, I don't know. It's been so long since I've had one. If I dig into the memories and use a bit of imagination, the list has a few things on it. Other than the obligatory sense of humour and adventure? And a good kisser. (underated talent that one) I'm into soft, inquisitve hands, furry chests, soft, great skin, the desire to take things nice and slowly (well, at first anyway) and an affectionate nature - no cuddles, no nooky. Them's the rules.

I also admire anybody who sees through my initial skittishness and lets me come out of my shell. That's an uncommon trait.

That will do for a start.

Pity it's a moot point at the moment. Must try and do something about that.

4. Could you adjust to life in another country?

Definitely. I've moved countries on  few occasions now. I moved to England in 1991 - which was like returning to my true home in many ways. It was like living in an older, more cultured, accepting country. I loved my time in England. I also moved to Greece in 2003 for a few months, living on Mykonos for a few months - which I absolutely loved. I seem to be able to get on in most places after a time. I'm lucky - I pick up bits of languages pretty easily and can get on with most people given the chance.

5. If you could study anything, what would it be?

Ah, I've been thinking about this of late. Part of me wishes that I went back to school, got better grades and applied for Medicine twenty years ago - there is something in me that may have made a good doctor - but I've never had the confidence to pull that off - and subsequently that would have been a bad move.

I'm toying with going back to university part time at the moment - Law, Creative Writing and Journalism are on the short list. I feel like a change in career is in the wind.

6. What is your favorite possession that cost less than $15?

There are a few things I possess that fall into this category. My Kmart skinny jeans that make my bum look great ($10), my white sandshoes (also Kmart, $6) are really comfy amd great for messing around in. My red comb that I've had for over twenty years - cheap but it untangles my hair with ease. My collection of thongs (jandles, flip flops, shower shoes - depending on where you come from) all cost less than $15 - in a multitude of colours, I love them - and live in them over summer. Sorry I can't put it down to one thing.

7. Which colour do you wear most often?

I live in black. It's a Melbourne thing.

8. What has been your “theme song”, or favorite song this year?

As my musical knowledge stops at around 1995, finding a this year's song is hard. My theme song is normally either The Rolling Stone's "Sympathy for the Devil" or The Pixie's "Where is my Mind?".

However, I love, adore, Josh Pike's Lighthouse Song. Though technically, I think it's from last year. Never mind.

9. What's the most romantic thing that's ever been said to you?

Gawd! In lieu of the fact that I've had next to no romance in my life, that's a hard one. Comments like "You have stupendous tits!" aren't romantic at all, though once I would have seen it as such (not any more). Working with engineers, you get the odd - "Gee, you're really great. I have no idea how you get the beer in on time." would once be classed as a romantic comment.

After a long hard think, the most romantic thing ever said to me was many years ago. It took my breath away at the time. We were talking about an imminent trip up to Puffing Billy, a steam train in the Dandenongs (which is very cool and great fun)

He said, "You are just like a steam train. You're mesmerising and fascinating, rare and elusive. You have the strange ability to drive men nuts, but in a good way."

That made me cry. I thought he was going to say that I was huge, only capable of going in one direction, full of hot air and on rails.

10. What would be your dream birthday cake?

Do I have to choose one? David Jones does this really wonderful flourless lemon cake with lemon cream cheese icing -  an old favorite. However, we had this vanilla creation from Brunettis for Gloria's birthday this year which was amazing! I just like cake... and ice cream. Hmmm, maybe an ice cream cake.

This is not a topic to be thinking about as I'm about to embark on the 12wbt as of Monday...

11. What is the coolest thing you’ve ever done?

Despite having next to no street cred, I've done some pretty cool things. I lived in England illegally for six years - not sure it that's cool or stupid. Living on Mykonos hostessing at a notorious gay bar - that was cool. The balloon ride the boys gave me for my fortieth - excellent. The seven country trip around the world last year - really cool.

Still doesn't compare to running a full half marathon last year. That was the most fullfilling and complete moment of my life. Smiled for weeks after that. A really, really cool acheivement - even if it is just daggy old running a  really long distance.

Another Stolen MeMe

I give thanks to the Plastic Mancunian for giving me this. It's something to pick over at lunchtime - and there are some pointed ones in this one.

1. Which state do you consider to be the most boring state?

I suppose being bored is the most boring state - well state of being. If you're talking Australian States - well all of them have their great bits and all of them have their boring bits. The ACT is boring, but that's a territory, not a state. I'd call Tasmania boring. It may be the most beautiful place on the planet but everybody is in bed by 10 pm - just like New Zealand.

2. If any chef from the Food Network (or any well known chef) could cater your wedding, who would it be?

I know I'd be asking Adriano Zumbo to do the cake. I'd love Gary Mehigan to cook for my wedding - as long as I could take out heart attack insurance for all of the butter he seems to use.

3. What's the last thing you ate that was red?

I had grilled capsicum on my pizza last night (home made healthy pizza that was - not the store bought crap)

4. Have you ever questioned the sexuality orientation of a close friend?

Yes. Not so strangely, we are no longer in contact - not that I ever asked him outright - and not that I care. But for ten years I was wondering - and most people who met him believed him to be "batting for the other team". When he moved back to Europe we lost track of him. Part of me believes that he's now wearing a skirt and calling himself Narelle.

5. Everyone loses a friend after some big fight. Tell us about one.

I don't really fight with people - the odd tiff and that is it. I lost a friend recently after a doozy of a fight - but we've since reaffirmed the boundaries and are back in contact. Not saying any more than that. Not worth hashing over. We were both in the wrong. And both in the right. Not that he will admit to that.

6. Have you ever washed an iPod or mp3 player in the washing machine?

No. I washed a passport once. That was an expensive mistake. Always leave a day to do your washing after a long distance trip. Saves stupid things like that happening. I might not have forgotten to check the pockets if I'd left it a day.

7. Have you ever screamed / yelled angrily at a boss?

Yes. Poor Popeye. Under-utilisation is a bitch. Who else are you supposed to take your frustration out on? The cat? That's what bosses are there for - as long as you don't make a habit of it.

8. Have you ever cried yourself to sleep?

I did so for twenty years. I don't do it any more. Thankfully I have very little to cry about now.

9. Have you ever regretted being in a relationship with someone?

Yes. Next.

10. Have you ever acted like you understood something when you didn't have a clue?

I work in IT. I am the non-technical person in an IT department. This is what I do best. I'm also very good at saying "You're so clever. I could never do that? Have a biscuit - I made them just for you." This makes up for being clueless.

11. Have you ever thought someone must have been insane? If yes, tell us something about the person.

I said it in the last question. I work in IT. Everybody is a little insane. It's all relative.

12. Have you ever pretended to be younger than what you are?

No, but I'm confused for a person who is a lot younger. I'm often going to the cinema and telling the attendant I'm 12. One time in ten they will give you a child's ticket. It's always worth a try.

13. Back in the day, did you ever cry because you were turned down for a date?

What is a date? I've forgotton. Can't remember - haven't been on one of thsie for years. I hope this changes soon.

14. Have you ever (or your significant other) had a pregnancy scare?

Unfortunately, yes. They're not good for the stress levels. They're just not good at all. Next.

15. Have you ever pretended to like someone when you didn't?

No. If I don't like somebody, I find it hard to pretend that I like them. I'll be civil. I'll interact with them - but generally I give people I don't like a wide berth and leave them to it.

16. What was the last thing you did that was totally selfish, yet you feel no guilt?

I took a box of Krispy Kreme donuts to my sister's on Monday. I pinched one more than I should have. I have no guilt about this. I know they were a gift, but I bought them (well used a voucher that was given to me).... Selfish, I know, but there is no guilt attached. I ran the donut off last night. My sister wouldn't have done that.

17. Tell us about a film fave of yours that we probably have not seen.

An Argentinian Film I saw last year - "The Secrets in their Eyes". (in Spanish "El Secreto de sus Ojos".) It won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. Superlative. But not many English speakers would have seen it. Atmospheric, dark, deep, intense - this thriller had me on the edge of my seat for most of the film. Brilliant.

18. When was the last time you kissed someone that you shouldn't have on the lips?

About three years ago. Not giving details on that one either. I was drunk. I don't do that any more. Get drunk that is. And try and kiss people.

19. When was the last time you cooked something for someone not in your family?

Two weeks ago. I had a friend down from Bathurst and another friend staying from Bendigo. I got to play Mum. I did my version of pizza (300 calories, healthy and yummy) Chicken in Pesto and Proscuitto and Steak with Mushroom sauce over the weekend. I love cooking for people.

20. When was the last time you danced like a crazy person?

Last week, I dance around like a crazy person a lot. I just don't do it in public.

21. When was the last time you just wanted to be invisible?

Two weeks ago. Coming out of a team meeting I got out of the lift and walked into a glass door on the wrong floor. I had to get back into the lift with my team - all of whom were laughing at me. Just wished the lift would swallow me up then and there.

22. When was the last time you got a gift you absolutely hated?

Oh dear, a few years ago now. Why would anybody give me a silicon cock ring? What use have I got for sex toys? Still bemuses and upsets me in equal measure.

23. When was the last time you got into a physical fight? (If NEVER, let us know about a time that you got close to a fight.)

Not so much a fight, but the last time I scared the shit out of somebody was a few years ago in a St Kilda car park. A junkie got too close - and he saw the back end of my mouth and ire - he nearly jumped me as I got out of the car - I yelled, screamed and tormented him into a corner. Scared the hell out of Blarney who was with me at the time.

24. When was the last time you had to sleep with a light on?

Bad experience in London - a heavy breathing caller in the middle of the night. Scared the living hell out of me. Woke my flatmate at the time who laughed it off - but I was there with a kitchen knife and the light on for a couple of days after that.

25. When was the last time you were under some serious stress?

Just before I left Tin Can, String and Whistle. That sucked. Thankfully it was over pretty quick.

26. When was the last time you watched your favorite movie?

A few months ago while "between jobs". Love Donnie Darko.

27. What song did you most recently downloaded?

I think that would be a Ben Lee album. I'm still hooked on CDs... showing my age, I am.

28. What would you say is your favorite hobby?

Writing - though I do that for a living. Running - that's more a lifestyle choice. Reading is my favorite hobby.

29. What is your favorite thing to do when you hang out with friends?

Watch movies and drink coffee. That's what I do when I hang out with friends.

30. What would you rather do: shower or bathe with that celebrity that you are crushing on?

Please can I throw Clive Owen in the bath. Please, please, please.

31. What is your absolute favorite dessert?

Creme Brulee. There is nothing better than a creme brulee - not that I have one very often. Ice cream is the sixth food group so that doesn't count.

32. What can someone do to make you smile, no matter what?

Give me a puppy or a kitten. That will do it. Ice cream can also help.

33. What do the hip people think of you?

Probably very little.

34. What was the last gift you bought someone?

I bought Trin a set of Affirmation Cards for her birthday. Thankfully, she claimed she loved them.

35. What was your favorite class in high school?

French. It was something I was pretty good at and something I've never lost.

36. How many spouses would be about right?

I'd like to see what one would be like. I can't be greedy. It's something I wonder about - what would it be like to be married. I have no idea.

37. What would you say was the most embarrassing moment of your life?

38. Have you ever donated money to charity?

I do so regularly. The Fred Hollows Foundation gets a monthly stipend and I do a few charity runs a year.

39. Has porn ever had a positive place in a current or recent relationship?

Other than to laugh at - no. Doesn't float my boat.

40. Would you ever dump the one you're with for someone who makes an obvious play and is MUCH hotter?

41. Have you ever disowned one of your relatives?

Nearly, but not quite. As my relatives are half way across the country they're easy to dismiss without full on disowning. I have one uncle that I haven't seen in over five years - and I'm not feeling the loss. Not that I don't want to see him, just don't feel the need. He hasn't contacted me either.

42. Would you think it's OK to cheat on someone if they've already cheated on you?

No. Cheating isn't good. If you want to screw around, get out of your relationship first. It's unfair - and this sort of tit for tat behaviour is unbecoming to all parties.

43. Did you ever consider becoming a teacher?

Yes. When I left school I wanted to be a French teacher. But I hated the way they taught French at University, so that idea went out the window. Then a few years back, I decided to leave banking and go and do a Dip Ed and teach English. That never happened either as I found IT. I think I got the better end of the deal.

44. Would you ever give a hitch-hiker a ride somewhere?

No. Just no worth it - no matter how good looking they may be.

45. Would you ever try fasting for a whole week?

It's not out of the realms of possiblility knowing some of the strange crap I get to up. But it would take a lot to commit to - and it would ahve to be under the right circumstances - like say at an ashram.

46. Would you ever try to quit one of your addictions, or better said: Bad Habits?

I stopped sucking my thumb at 33. I gave up smoking a few years ago. What is left? Picking my nose in the car? Burping after a meal. Not sure what I would give up really.
47. Could you ever kill yourself to save someone else?

I'm unsure about this one - but I think I would put myself in the line of danger for somebody I loved. Thankfully this has never been tested.
48. Does it matter if you break up with someone or have them dump you?

Nope. But getting out sooner rather than later is a good thing.

49. Would you rather have a turtle or a frog for a pet?

Neither. I'd rather have a pet that is a bit more interactive. My sister has a turtle who appears to live under a beanbag and likes to bite you. Frogs are just boring. Great for the environment, but really, they're just boring. Give me a cat or dog any day.

50. Would you rather spend a day with Lady Gaga or Miley Cyrus?

Lady Ga Ga thanks. Neither overly appeal to me but at least Ga Ga is a grown up.

51. Would you rather learn to play piano or guitar?

One of my few 'regrets' is that I never learned how to play the piano. I play the flute and I can pick out a tune on a keyboard, but I wish I could play properly. Never got lessons. It's down in the when I win the lottery jobs.

53. What Asian country would you like to visit the most? Why?

I'd love to go back to Thailand. I loved it there a few years ago and the people, food, culture and scenery are wonderful. Would love to check out Japan too - fascinating culture among other things.

No. And why would I think about James Blunt. The guy sounds like somebody has his balls in a pair of kitchen tongs.

55. Ever told someone that your fake jewelery was really real?

No. I don't wear much jewellery, and the real stuff I have, is real - and the fake stuff looks fake.

56. Where are the worst public restrooms?

There are some at the docks in Santorini that are equivalent to the seventh layer of hell. The ones at the 1000 Steps in the Dandenongs are really rank by the end of the day too - rather hang on and go to the ones at McDonalds down the road tan use them.

57. What song was the latest one that got overplayed really fast?

That crappy "Friday" song that some California Dentist's daughter paid to have made (Which was just covered on Glee). It's so bad it's catchy.

58. What Friends (American TV show from the 90s) character are you most like?

Probably Phoebe. I'm happy to have that disputed. I have some of Monica's OCD too, but I'm a bit like Phoebe.

59. When's the last time you had a Popsicle?

Three days ago - but it wasn't a Popsicle - it was a Paddle Pop. That's what they're called over here. Ice cream addict, I am.

60. What TV show from way back would you love to see reappear?

An English program called 'Drop the Dead Donkey". It was the funniest program on telly. We don't have good satire like that any more.

I've stolen this off the Plastic Mancunian. Memes are good when your brain is fried but you know you want to write.

1. Tell us who the last person was that you showered with.
Do I have to?  Mind you, I should be pleased I was showering with him - at least I knew he was clean then. He liked the water about ten degrees cooler than I did - wuss.

2. Tell us about your favorite tee-shirt. Extra points if you show a pic. (We know. What can you do with freakin' extra points?)

I have a pink t-shirt with the word "GEEK" emblazoned across the front in big letters. I wear it on fun runs. I wear it a lot - it always gets comments.

3. Has anyone ever hit on you even though they knew you were taken?
Never been taken, but have been hit on occasionally.

4.  Do you plan what to wear the next day?
During the week when I have to go to work, yes. Stops me having to think in the morning. Can climb into the clothes after the shower in the morming. Easy.

5. How are you feeling RIGHT now? Why?
A bit tired and a bit sore. Two hours in a darkened, airless room talking about computer processes will do the tired to you. Sore from yesteday's 14 kilometre run - but it's not bad sore. More a "I know I've done some work and I'll be fine after a walk and a stretch" sore.

6. What's the closest thing to you that's black?
My bra. It's next to my skin.

7. Tell me about an interesting dream you remember having.
I was dreaming about American power outlets in a grey metal the other day. I'm in Kabbalistic dream group - I remember lots of funny dreams.

Other than the odd random shop person, no, no meaningful new people were met. Yesterday was far better for meeting people.

9. If you could be doing anything right now (or perhaps after you finish this ridiculous meme)what would it be?
I would do Clive Owen. That's easy.

However, I will probably make some eggplant (aubergine) parmigiana and then go to bed.

I am emotional. I can be overly emotional, but I'm able to keep things in check for the most part.

I think I'd like to revisit "Tommy". It's been over a decade.

A bit of both.

The covers of my Artemis Fowl books. They're all sparkly - and a great read!

England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, New Zealand, France, Spain, The Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Germany (though only passed through on a train), USA. Not sure if Tasmania counts - it's a law unto itself.

26. Have you ever made a phone call while you were drunk that you've regretted? If yes, do tell.
Yes, but I don't remember. It only came up in my call log the next day. I was told that I was piss funny and rather pointed amd insistant in my requests.

27. Where were you going the last time that you were on a train?
I was going to the Run for the Kids on Sunday. Amazingly, it was the first time in six years of living in this flat that I had got on the train at my local station. I normally take the tram.

I think I bought my first mobile phone sometime in the mid 1990’s while I was in London. It was the size of a standard house brick.

I dunno - I love what the Plastic Mancunian has to say about things in his memes.

Where has that google "I'm feeling lucky" button gone when you need it? Somebody Chinese I suppose!

Just me. And Clive Owen - in my dreams.

Probably. Though I'm hardening up in my old age and I take far less crap from people now.

35. When was the last time that you were in love?
About three years ago. Would rather not think about that.

Blarney is Irish, with blue eyes, dark curly hair, a fantastic, practial black and white to my big shade of grey. Mother of twins, forever upbeat - and she lends me her second prize possession - her cat, Maow Maow. The best of friends lend you their cats.

37. What was the stupidest thing you learned in high school?
The first person subjunctive case of the verb etre in French is "fus" - like who uses the subjunctive in conversational French? The rules of tennis and how to make a roux come close behind.


38. What was the last thing that you cried about?
Friday night I had a panic attack. It lasted a few minutes, but I cried then. And the last five minutes of the film "Barney's Version". Saw it a fortnight ago. Bawled myself stupid - wonderful film - Paul Giamatti is a genius.

39. What was the last question you asked?
"What's wrong with being a Crows supporter?"

40. Favorite thing to do this time of the year?
Kick piles of leaves. Cuddle up under the duvet. Run in the drizzle. Wear a coat. Watch the ANZAC Day parade (this year I want to go to dawn service, not just watch it on telly.)

41. If you had to get a (or another) tattoo, what would it be?
I've been threatening to get the World Wildlife Panda tattooed on my bum next to the very small Chinese symbol for love which is already there. It's been threatened for years. I won't do it. But I think about it.

42. How would your best friend describe you?
Kind, nuts, smart, loyal, affectionate (I mind her kids and cat a bit - smother them with cuddles and kisses - that's why I say the last one)

43. Have you ever seen all three Twilight films?
Yes. The first and third were okay - just okay. The second one needs to get drowned with that cat book we read for book group this month.

I'm not looking forward to the fourth film - possibly the worst book I've read in the last ten years - second only to that cat book. Renesmee - like sheesh - get me a sledgehammer so I can destroy the mormon's word processor.

No, but I've laughed as my dear old blind dog did every so often.

Scarlet. Blue comes a close second.

Yes. But I was twelve at the time.

The Farrah Fawcett flick. I have boofy eighties hair - it works well for me.

To a point. They're nothing without intelligence, a sense of humour and personality.

Depends on how big the lie is. White lies fine - anything bigger - probably no.

Effing Telstra. Same service - just keeps on going up and up and up. Telcos suck - no matter who they are.

52. Do you like your life right now?
It's not too bad at the moment. Going through a heap of changes - which is good. Gotta love change.

53. Do you sleep with the TV on?
I will fall asleep with the telly on, but I tend to wake and turn it off after half an hour of sleeping. I never wake to find it on anyway.

However, when overseas, I tend to keep the telly on low at night when staying in hotels. It helps me  retain language (and makes me feel not so alone).

54. Can you handle the truth?
Most of the time.

55. Do you have good vision?
It's getting better. I'm slightly short-sighted but it's correcting with age.

56. Do you hate or dislike more than 3 people?
I don't hate people. There are more than three people I wouldn't piss on if they were on fire, but it doesn't mean I hate them - I just don't care for them at all. They don't number that many. Tony Abbott and John Howard front the list.

57. How often do you talk on the phone?
Two or three times a day on average.

58. What celeb would you like to come home to?
Clive Owen

Black t-shirt, leggings, bra and undies - standard after work wear.

60. What is your favorite wild animal?
Rather fond of tigers and pandas and lions. I'd love to have a lion! Meerkats are fun to watch at the zoo too.

Where I'm sitting at the moment. On my iPhone in front of my book cases. It's my avatar for this blog too.

No. I have a fear of dancing which is almost as strong as my fear of falling and my fear of intimacy.

Yes. By day I'm a  consulting technical writer at Bastard Bank. Out of hours I'm a holistic healer, tarot reader, writer, reiki healer and reflexologist. Love having a portfolio career.

64. What was the most recent thing you stole?
Stationery from Tin Can, String and Whistle. It's not really stealing - I grew very attached to that stapler over the three years I was there. We have a bond.

As I child I remember doing that. But I can pick locks now so I don't need to.

The Last Meme of 2010

I'm stealing this off the Plastic Mancunian - King of the Meme. I have heaps to say, but as Mercury is still in retrograde and I have a large ironing pile, I recking it's iron a piece of clothing and answer a question.
PM has given people permission to steal this, so please go ahead (Thanks PM)

1. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?

Hmm. Quite a few things.

I went to the Netherlands and Spain.
I ran a full half marathon, all the way.
My job got made retundant and I got retrenched - that's never happened before.
I saved money.
I kept my car reasonably clean - normally Andrew is filled with empty water bottles, not this year.
I won a competition with a big prize.

In the scheme of things, nothing that big - but they meant a lot to me.

2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

No - and partly because injury and illness played with my head - however, I did make a resolution to write more, and I have kept this blog for the better part of the year. I'm pleased with that, as I'm writing regularly - even if it is navel gazing drivel.

Resolutions for next year will be discussed in another blog. I have a few things I want and need to acheive this year, but I want to write about it in more detail later.

3. How will you be spending New Year's Eve?

I'm going around to Blarney and Barney's for a house party. Can't drink as I'm driving, but I have made a cassata - a large ice cream cake. It will be a mellow affair, especially as we're expecting 40 degrees in Melbourne tomorrow and also because most of Blarney and Barney's mates have young kids.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

I lost two friends from my co-freemasons lodge - both very special women in very different ways. Though not particulary close, they are missed.

5. What countries did you visit?

For a change, I can say something here - Singapore, Malaysia, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Spain and Germany for about six hours (transiting through to the Netherlands...)

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?

Oh, that's too easy. Sex - in the words of my favorite Patrick Marber play, what do you have to do to get a bit of intimacy around here?. And a few more adventures. I like going on adventures.

7. What date from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

30 May. It was the day that I ran a full half marathon.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Running the full said half marathon. I'd done two half marathons before this but I walk/ran them. This time I ran all the way - okay, so the 21.1 kms took me two hours and 33 minutes to complete, it's just the fact that I RAN THE WHOLE FREAKING WAY. This isn't a think I'll forget easily.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Losing some weight. I'm a kilogram heavier than I was at the start of the year, but I've maintained - which is good under the circumstances. This wasn't a weight loss time. There were other things to concentrate on. (To be discussed in a0 later blog)

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Unfortunately the last six months have been a litany of crap. A badly strained  calf muscle, followed by this recurring pain in my side, which turned out to be a benign tumour around my fallopian tube - that was operated on in September. Then my right knee blew up late in the year - and I'm still waiting for my whooping cough results. Not a good year for injury and illness.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

I didn't really make any large purchases this year, but I'm rather fond of my GPS, Shirley. I bought a purple dress in the UK at TK Maxx - I love that. Oh, and two pairs of Asics Kayano trainers in the US - at a third of the price of what we pay here. Rather fond of my little food processor too - I have no idea how I functioned in the kitchen without it.

12. Where did most of your money go?

Rent. But I managed a five week overseas holiday this year - and that took up quite a bit too.

13. What song will always remind you of 2010?

Unfortunately it will be something from Lady Gaga - I'm not really a fan, but they play her all the time at the gym and her music gets in your head.

Martha Wainwright's "Motherfucking Arsehole" will always remind me of a session at dream group - but this can't be discussed here. It was an incredibly intense evening and the song fitted what was going on perfectly.

14. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Laughed. It hasn't been a laughing year, though it's had it's moments. And writing - I wish I had more time to write.

15. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Sat in doctor's waiting rooms. I'm over doctors. Next year will be much better.

16. What was your favourite TV program?

Ah, I have a couple.

I adore Glee - just great fun and positive messages.

I'm still a sucker for medical shows like Embarrassing Bodies and RPA.

Masterchef and The Biggest Loser are my can't miss shows - the only reality shows I watch.

17. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

I don't hate people - too strong a word. I have had a recent blow out with a friend, yet to be repaired. He's not in the good books, but I don't hate him. I'm hoping time and space will sort this out.

18. What was the best book you read?

David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas was amazing.

I listened to Margaret Atwood's The Year of the Flood on the way back to Adelaide and loved it - now I have to read Oryx and Crake - I adore Margaret Atwood.

20. What was your favorite film of this year?

I'm going to put a few.

The Argentinian masterpiece, "The Secret in their Eyes" was sublime. I have no trouble with subtitles, but this was an unexpected gem.

"The King's Speech" has to win a few Oscars - adored it.

"Inception" was great in an action way. Fantastic thought processes.

21. What did you do on your birthday?

Went out to dinner with friends and my folks. A very pleasant night was had.

22. What kept you sane?

Writing, sleep and exercise. And the occasional ice cream.

23. Who did you miss?

Nobody at the moment. Ask me this in three months - as I'm now no longer employed at Tin Can, String and Whistle, I'll miss quite a few people, but as it's only been a week this hasn't sunk in yet.

I have missed running with Dan and Roger over the last few months - but I still see them occasionally, so they're not missed per se.

Now I think about it, I miss Reindert - well, I talk to him most weeks, but I miss having him about. He's fun.

24. Who was the best new person you met?

The Rosemary and Colin, the couple I met when I was in Granada at the Alhambra.  I can't single out any new friends, but these two kept me entertained all day, and it made it all the more memorable - they were a laugh - and a breath of fresh air after speaking Spanglish for the entire week before.

25. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010:

A positive attitude and a bit of perseverence can get you further than you would ever think.

Oh, and never stop wishing on stars. It does work.
